Radio Usage - Procedures Guide

Radio Usage Basics

Radio users need always to imagine themselves as the intended recipient of their transmission, and think about what they say, and how they say it.

Firstly, users need to make sure that the person that they want to speak to is listening, by getting their attention.

Unlike with a telephone, in a group of radio users you are not ONLY speaking to the person you want to speak to. So, do not just launch into your message without making sure you have the ear of your recipient first,by asking for them by name.

Assuming the sender is FRED and the intended recipient is JIM, here's how it should be done:

FRED: Jim, this is Fred, are you receiving, over?   < waits for a response from Jim, repeats his call if Jim doesn't answer after a while>

JIM: Jim receiving, go ahead

FRED: <says whatever he wants to say>
