Water Resistant / Waterproof Walkie-Talkie Radios

All walkie-talkies are robust enough to be used outside in a bit of rain. But some users need a higher level of water-resistance.

Here we review some walkie-talkies with IP ratings high enough to be considered “waterproof”.

Tritan Tough Talk

The small, lightweight and IP67-rated Tritan Tough Talk packs a considerable punch for its size. Its IP67 rating means it should survive being dropped into water up to 1 metre deep, provided it’s taken out within 30 minutes.

Full 4 watts power output – much more than licence-free PMR446 radios which have only 0.5 watts.

Price: Around ยฃ179 + VAT for a twin pack

What’s included

Sold as a twin pack containing two radios with battery packs and two desk charger units in a strong reusable plastic carry case.

โœ“ Pros

Full 4 watt power at a lower cost than most comparable radios. IP67 waterproof rating – good for outdoor environments where they may get wet or dropped in water.

โœ— Cons

Requires an Ofcom “Simple UK” licence (ยฃ75 for five years). IP67 isn’t as good as IP68 – may not be ideal for use next to swimming pools.

Verdict: A very good value-for-money full power IP67 waterproof walkie-talkie.

Entel HT782

The Entel HT782 offers complete waterproofness at an affordable price. It’s IP68 rated, meaning it will survive being immersed in quite deep water.

Ideally suited for applications where the radio may get dropped into water – swimming pools, leisure centres, or lifeguard use.

Price: ยฃ179 + VAT each (ยฃ169 + VAT when buying 5+)

What’s included

Sold singly with a desk charger unit.

โœ“ Pros

IP68 rated – will survive being immersed in deep water. The highest waterproof rating available.

โœ— Cons

Fairly expensive – only worth it if you specifically need a completely watertight radio.

Verdict: The ideal choice where radios may be dropped into water – swimming pools, leisure centres, or lifeguard applications.
