Walkie Talkies With Lone Worker / Emergency Features

What Are "Lone Worker Protection" and "Man Down" Walkie Talkie Radios?

Uses for lone worker and man down walkie talkiesLone worker protection and "man down" features are designed to alert a group of walkie talkie users that one of their colleagues may be in need of assistance.

They are very useful to help to protect staff who work on their own (hence "lone worker") and / or whose job roles may make them susceptible to possible accidental harm or injury.

Examples include people working at height, who could fall off ladders etc, or people doing security work who may be attacked by intruders, or people working with dangerous machinery.

How "Lone Worker Protection" Radio Features Work

There are three ways that a walkie talkie can send out its "alert" signal to notify other nearby radio users that there may be a problem.

1. The user can press the "red button" on top of his or her radio to trigger an alert message. This is the simplest method by which an alert can happen.

2. The timed "lone worker" feature. Every "x" minutes (x can be set according to needs) a radio will "beep" to remind its' user to press the Push To Talk button to indicate that they are OK. If they fail to press this button in, say, 30 seconds, their radio will send out an alert message.

3. The "man down" tilt switch fitted inside the walkie-talkie, to detect that it is on its side. The idea is that if the radio user is upright, with his radio on a belt clip, then he is OK. If the radio is on its side, this could mean that he has fallen down, passed out etc.

A walkie-talkie radio equipped with the "man down" feature will start to "beep" if it is left on its side for more than, say, 30 seconds. If it is not put the right way up after another 30 seconds or so, it will start to send out its alert message.

How Are Other Walkie Talkie Users Notified Of An Alert?

"Lone Worker" walkie talkies have an "alert mode" where the radio sends out an audible and visual alarm which should be picked up by other walkie-talkies in the workgroup. On our Entel DX485 digital walkie-talkies, the radio number  or user name of the radio in "alert mode" will be clearly displayed on the screens of other Entel DX485 radios in the workgroup.
